What Happens After We Die?

April 15th, 2005

Last night Bobby and I watched a very interesting edition of the CNN show Larry King Live. Larry had a number of religious leaders making up the panel: an evangelical Christian, Roman Catholic, Muslim, Jew, Atheist and spiritualist. The question posed to each of them was, “What happens after we die?” Most everyone on the panel except for the evangelical Christian and the Atheist said that what happens depends on the works and righteousness you produce in life. Some said there was no such thing as hell. The Atheist was convinced that there is nothing after death, but simply the end of existence. Others sounded hopeful, that somehow all that they have done will get them into good favor with God. John MacArthur was the only one who talked about Jesus. So, needless to say, there were many concerning viewpoints represented and I found it refreshing when Larry turned to John MacArthur and asked him “What happens after we die?” John MacArthur answered, “Well, when you die, you go to one of two places, according to scripture. You go out of the presence of God forever, or you go into the presence of God forever. Depending upon your personal relationship with Jesus Christ, which is according to the Bible the only way to enter heaven.”

Though the show already aired, I recommend reading the transcript available at CNN’s website by simply following this link:

Wish I had seen that! It sounds like a great show - If I’m correct - I do believe that Larry King is a Christian. So it’s encouraging to know that he’s breaking the traditional news person’s role and branching out into new territory.

I will definitely check on those transcripts.

Thanks so much, Christa! I can’t tell you what an encouragement you’ve been to me the last few days. And it is great to have a new blogging friend. I look forward to seeing what God is doing in your life!

Well, Larry King is a Jew married to a Mormon gal from Provo. When he had Kathy Lee Gifford (definitely a born again Christian) she tried to encourage him to read Lee Strobel’s book “The Case for Christ” and “The Case for Faith.” I’ve heard him say that he doesn’t believe in anything after one dies. Sad. Larry had a similiar show on a year or so ago and I was able to get the DVD of it…so that is a possibility, I would imagine, for those who might be interested in seeing it and not just reading the transcript.

I wish I could have seen this! My daughter had a group of friends over last night, and had the television. I really like hearing John MacArthur.

    Sis-

I watched the show and was also refreshed by the Bible through John MacArthur (I’m going to his school next year.) One thing that struck me was that he was really the only one with a basis for what he said. He always referred back to the Bible. The others, especially the Jew, the Catholic, and the spiritualist, did not really refer to any source for their beliefs, and some of those beliefs were so vague I couldn’t even explain what they were talking about. (i.e. When I die I am going to find fulfillment for all my longings? What does that mean?) Thanks for the post, Sis. Keep up the awesome stuff.
