Blowing my mind…

“God knows neither beginning nor end. He simply is
from everlasting to everlasting. Man came into being,
but God is–and when we have said that, rather than
obscuring the truth about Him, we have stated the
profoundest reality of His being. He was, and is, and is
to come, the eternal ‘I Am.’ This Name rocks our minds
with the discovery that we cannot begin to fathom the mind
and life of this eternal God.”

This quote is from a book I’m reading called A Heart for God by Sinclair B. Ferguson. I read this part this morning and my mind feels like it could burst just trying to understand the reality that God did not come from anything–He was not made or derived in some way–instead He is and has eternally existed in Himself. I don’t know what to think but awe.

As small little creations our minds cannot contain such a great mystery as God. Though I find this fact of God’s eternal existence to be extremely puzzling, it also produces a reverence. I like how Ferguson says, “Try as we may, God’s being defies our understanding.” I’m really enjoying this book because it is helping me see some amazing things about God. I want to have a clear, right view of just how awesome God is. I think that in turn I will have a much more accurate perspective of how small and powerless I am–in desperate need of God. Later in this chapter Ferguson says:

“The fact of God’s eternal being makes its impact in different
ways. For the unbeliever, it is absolutely intolerable. It tells
him, ‘God is God; you are but one of His creatures. Your only
joy is to be found in obeying Him, your true fulfillment is to be
found in worshipping Him, your only wisdom is to be found in
trusting and knowing Him.’…the heart of the unbeliever will be
restless until it finds its rest in God.”
I find this convicting because I know that there are times when I try to derive joy from worldly things, or be fulfilled in accomplishing things for myself. But I cannot find anything true or worthwhile apart from Him. For the believer this same truth is very comforting because as we learn how frail and lost we are, we can be found in Him and trust His Word and follow His ways.
I think I understand a little better why the creatures in heaven never stop saying-
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,
who was, and is, and is to come”
Revelation 4:8
